Briefing to International Partners and Multilateral Institutions: Upholding International Law and Rejecting Illegal Claims on Eritrean Territory
The Eritrean Sovereignty Network (ESNhub) announces its establishment and conveys deep concern over escalating rhetoric asserting Ethiopia’s alleged entitlement to Eritrean maritime territory, alongside related disinformation that risks undermining regional stability.
The Network is a diaspora-led civic network bringing together Eritrean professionals and scholars to provide fact-based analysis, legal clarification, and early warning on issues affecting Eritrea’s sovereignty and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The Network is initiated and led by Eritreans in the diaspora who have long advocated for the rule of law, accountability, and responsible governance in Eritrea, often through diverse efforts and initiatives. In response to current external challenges, they are now united in defending Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, recognizing that sovereignty is the foundation upon which all other national aspirations depend.
Ongoing and increasingly pervasive rhetoric by senior Ethiopian officials asserting claims over Eritrea, particularly its maritime domain, is inconsistent with international law and carries destabilizing implications for regional peace. Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are legally settled and not subject to renegotiation.
The Network further notes increasingly coordinated and systematic disinformation efforts aimed at distorting global understanding, manipulating domestic audiences, and normalizing unlawful territorial claims, thereby heightening the risk of miscalculation and undermining regional peace and stability..
In this context, the Network intends to contribute to clarity by sharing fact-based assessments and providing periodic updates and clarifications that address inaccuracies in public discourse and support informed engagement by international partners.
The Network calls on international partners, regional organizations, and multilateral institutions to reaffirm their commitment to international law, exercise restraint, and avoid enabling rhetoric or actions that undermine regional peace, legal norms, and established borders.
